Description
Bismarck Battleship Model Kit – Amati (B1614)
Bismarck was the first of two Bismarck-class battleships that were constructed for use in the Navy of Nazi Germany: the Kriegsmarine. It is named after Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, and was laid down in Hamburg in July 1936, before being launched in early 1939.
This ginormous battleship was heavily-armoured, and had a multitude of weaponry and defence mechanisms on board. It could also house four small aircrafts, and had a double-ended catapult to aid them with taking off.
Regardless of this impressive arsenal, Bismarck only ever conducted one offensive operation. It took place in May 1941, and was codenamed Operation Rheinübung. Bismarck, alongside the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, was ordered to force its way into the Atlantic Ocean and subsequently raid Allied shipping from North America to Great Britain. However, both ships faced resistance from HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales. HMS Hood was destroyed by the two German ships, and HMS Prince of Wales was forced to retreat. However, the destruction of HMS Hood led to a relentless torrent from the Royal Navy. Bismarck was subsequently assaulted by sixteen Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers, and after several critical hits, the ship was scuttled so as to avoid it being boarded by the British. It sunk in the North Atlantic on the 27th May 1941, and its wreckage wasn’t discovered until June 1989.
Overall, our rendition of the Bismarck is a fantastic replica, complete with a plethora of intricacies and fine details. The hull is coated in a subtle brown paint, with the deck a polished wood. Countless lines of rigging add to the realism of this wonderful model, making it a great addition to any enthusiast’s collection.
